You can't escape ads on the streets, in newspapers, magazines, websites and now on the software needed to control Windows computer monitors. LG was found to have installed the "LG Monitor App Installer" without the owner's permission through the Windows update system.
After the app was installed, it started displaying ads to install other apps such as McAfee Scam Detector and LG Calibration Studio. The ads could only be removed by uninstalling the LG Monitor App Installer.
LG's secret installation through the Windows Update system caught Microsoft's attention. Microsoft quickly intervened and yesterday LG quietly stopped installing the unauthorized apps immediately.
The issue was found to be occurring on at least eight LG UltraGear monitor models, including premium models sold at high prices. This is not the first time LG has introduced ads after the product was purchased, causing consumer outrage.
Two years ago, LG displayed ads on WebOS smart TVs when they were in static mode. They were activated suddenly and took up the entire space of the TV panel. This feature had to be manually turned off by the owner.
