Sign language subtitles are typically shown during news broadcasts or when important government announcements are made on television. Netflix recently reported that it has begun introducing American Sign Language (ASL) subtitles for a number of TV shows and movies offered through the platform.
Indiewire reported that Netflix and ASL sign language company SignUp Media have joined forces to introduce ASL subtitles for 73 TV shows and movies currently airing on the platform, including Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, Pokémon Horizons, Octonauts, The Magic School Bus Rides Again, and films like Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Offering ASL subtitles is seen as helping many Netflix subscribers who may not be able to speak or hear, as a previous report by SignUp Media stated that many deaf and mute people in the United States and globally often have difficulty understanding reading text due to low comprehension.
With ASL subtitles, it is hoped that it will help this group enjoy the television series and movies offered by Netflix even better. This feature has reportedly just been offered to Netflix subscribers in stages.
