Suno announced earlier this week that it would begin imposing limits on the number of songs that free and paid plan users can download. Starting September 3, free users will be limited to 8 song downloads per month while Pro subscribers will be limited to 20 songs per month. Subscribers on the most expensive plan, Premium, will be limited to 60 songs per month.
Premium subscribers who have access to the Studio feature will still be able to generate songs using artificial intelligence (AI) without limits, but only downloads will be limited. The new terms and conditions were introduced to control the flood of AI-generated songs produced through their platform.
It was part of Suno's settlement with Warner Music Group last year in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by WMG. Suno's competitor, Udio, took the drastic step of banning the download feature outright to settle a lawsuit also filed by Universal Music Group.
Platforms like Suno and Udio have been used to produce AI artists who then generate revenue through streaming platforms. Spotify and Deezer began introducing AI labels on non-human-produced songs this year. Once the labels are accepted, AI artists will no longer be recommended to users by the algorithms.
