Tun Siti Hasmah recently passed away at the age of 100, and numerous videos have circulated showing Tun Mahathir Mohamad mourning her passing. On social media platforms, images and videos generated using artificial intelligence (AI) have also appeared as expressions of mourning.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recently issued a statement regarding this matter, noting that any content depicting Tun Mahathir mourning Tun Siti Hasmah’s passing could be subject to legal action; the commission stated it would take firm measures to ensure such content is taken down and deleted.
It was also reported that one of these generative AI-generated videos garnered nearly a million views, alongside various other AI-generated content on the subject. Generative AI is a technology capable of creating diverse forms of content considered creative, yet it is also easily misused by anyone.
