Apple employees threatened to quit if they were banned from working from home

Apple employees have complained about the difficulty of getting permission to work remotely after the company announced a hybrid work system. In fact some employees say they will resign if the iPhone manufacturer does not change its policy.
As is known, a few months ago Apple announced a hybrid work system where employees have to go to the office three days a week. The new system will be implemented from early September.

Prior to implementing the work from home (WFH) system during an outbreak, Apple banned employees from working remotely. There are indeed exceptions and some teams also have softer rules on long -distance work policies.

But now, Apple employees admit the exemption was also rejected by the company. On the Slack company channel which has 6,000 people, about 10 people said they planned to resign because of the hybrid work system, or knew other employees had to resign.

An Apple employee says they now get an exemption and can work from home because they are covered by the American People with Disabilities Act. But workers say that accommodation will be denied once the hybrid work system is implemented.

“I will lose my job in September,” the employee wrote on Slack, as quoted by The Verge, Saturday (17/7/2021).

Apple typically gives employees 30 days to find a new job in the company if their team now refuses medical accommodation. But one employee said there are currently no vacancies.

Some workers have also heard that only people with documented medical conditions are allowed to work remotely on a regular basis. But Apple told employees asking for accommodation to hand over their medical records to the company, which made some employees feel uncomfortable.

This isn’t the first time Apple employees have objected to the announced hybrid work policy. In June, employee representatives wrote a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking for the policy to be reviewed.

Apple’s SVP of Retail and Apple People, Deirdre O’Brien later responded to the letter via video and said that face -to -face collaboration is very important and stressed Apple will not withdraw from its current approach.

Apple’s hybrid work policy is different from other technology companies, such as Facebook and Twitter. In fact the two social media companies allow their employees to work from home on a regular basis, even though the epidemic is over.

Currently, Apple employees are still in discussions to ask the company to change its policy. Some employees suggested writing another open letter, while others planned to discuss the lawsuit with an attorney.
