Sophisticated Robots Participate in Basketball at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

A robot participates in showing off his basketball skills at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The robot appeared outside the preliminary round of men’s basketball between the United States and France at Saitama Super Arena, Saitama, Japan on Sunday (25/7).
The robot, named CUE, demonstrated its ability to throw three pointers, free throws and even throw the ball from the middle of the field, all of which executed smoothly.

CUE is a sophisticated robot made by Toyota that was developed in 2018. This robot is designed to have a physique like a professional basketball athlete, with a height of more than 2 meters, as quoted from the Tech Times, Monday (26/7/2021).

CUE relies on a network of sensors on its body to map its throw, which depends on its distance from the basket. This black robot then adjusts the position of his hand before performing a perfect throw.

The CUE designer seems to be quite proud of the sophistication of his robot making. They even claim the CUE throw percentage can match one of the best basketball players in the world Stephen Curry.

Before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were held, CUE’s ability was also complained to two professional players from the Alvark Tokyo team. As a result, CUE managed to beat the two athletes with ease.

Although he is good at throwing basketballs with high accuracy, CUE still can’t beat basketball athletes in actual competition. For example, even equipped with wheels to move on the field, CUE movement is relatively slow when compared to professional athletes.

In addition, this robot also takes a long time to complete the throw, which is 15 seconds. By that time, other players have jumped high enough to block the throw.
