Coinciding with World Emoji Day, Emojipedia introduced a new line of emojis that will be launched in September of this year. Some of them have emojis featuring ‘Pregnant Man’ or pregnant men shaking hands with different skin tones.
The latest draft emoji list released by the Unicode Consortium, a nonprofit company, promotes the Unicode standard whose goal is to show more diversity in the human gender.
Emojipedia says the inclusion of the Pregnant Men emoji is an acknowledgment that pregnancy is possible in some transgender men and non -binary people.
The addition of pregnant men also marks another effort to increase emoji diversity. And of course the presence of the ‘pregnant man’ emoji was greeted by a number of controversial comments from famous figures
“I don’t know who needs to hear this but men can’t get pregnant,” tweeted Abigail Marone, Abigail Marone, press secretary of Republican Senator Josh Hawley.
"Apple just introduced the" pregnant man "emoji. Newsflash @Apple, only women can get pregnant!" wrote Mo Brooks, Alabama Republican senator candidate.
But there are also those who support the ‘pregnant man’ emoji. As Freddy McConnell, one of the few transgender men in the UK, gave birth to a child in 2019. He has warned that there is misinformation about the ability of transgender men to give birth.
"I'm not at all surprised that the emoji of a pregnant man is a finalist. Why not? Next year a pregnant man who loves low taxes and freedoms will be the new lover of the conservative movement." tweet John Miller.
In addition, the presence of a handshake emoji is a reminder of the murder case suffered by black man George Floyd until the riots in the US. This is also raising awareness and protests around the world to demand racial equality.
Other additional new emojis include a hand making a heart shape and someone biting their lip, plus a face that melts, greets, holds back tears, and peeks between their fingers.
