Getting to Know Chrome OS Used on Laptops for Students

The name Chrome OS is not as well known as Windows or MacOS. But that doesn’t mean Chrome OS doesn’t have its own advantages.

Chrome OS is an operating system owned and developed by Google. The operating system is based on Linux and is open source, which means it can be used for free.

One of the advantages of Chrome OS is how simple and easy it is to operate. When first launched, Chrome OS users could only access apps and games through the Chrome browser. But now the features of Chrome OS are getting richer.

Just like Android phones, Chrome OS devices can access apps and games in the Google Play Store. But this is only limited to devices released after 2017, as quoted from the Android Authority, Saturday (31/7/2021).

But keep in mind that not all apps and games in the Play Store are optimized for Chrome OS. So there are apps and games that can only be accessed with a vertical screen like on a mobile phone. Some newer Chromebooks can also run Linux -based applications and games.

Since government -distributed laptops are intended for students, one of the important things is productivity software such as Microsoft Office. Unfortunately, Chrome OS cannot run Windows or Mac OS software, including Microsoft Office.

But don’t worry because Microsoft provides a mobile version of the Office app that can be downloaded on the Play Store. In addition there is also a web version that can be accessed through a browser. But if you want to access other Windows applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, you must use VMWare.

When initially launched, Chrome OS devices require an internet connection even to perform simple tasks like editing documents. Fortunately, Google has now enhanced offline capabilities on Chrome OS and many popular apps like YouTube, Netflix and Spotify have offline options.

Chrome OS is also designed as a cloud -based operating system. So all files can be saved in Drive, documents can be created in Docs, and photos can be saved in Photos. Because everything can be stored in the cloud, the storage capacity is not very large.

Devices running Chrome OS typically have low specs due to the simple nature of this operating system and not being feature -rich like Windows or Mac OS. Most Chromebooks typically use an Intel Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage.

Due to the low specs and free operating system, Chromebooks are reasonably priced. But lately there are a lot of premium Chromebooks with higher specs and prices.
