Bitcoin Mining Secretly in the Office, Employees Arrested by Police

Tempted by the high profits obtained from mining cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and others, this employee is desperate to mine them in the office. His actions led to him being arrested by the police.

Christopher Naples is an information technology supervisor at the Long Island, New York County government office. He is accused of operating 46 Bitcoin mining devices in a government building.

At least 10 of those machines have continued to operate since February 2021, mining Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. As a result, electricity intake becomes very wasteful with bills swelling up to USD 6,000.

The mining equipment was placed in six different and hidden rooms so that it was not initially traced. For example, some are under the floor. Naples was arrested by the police for committing various violations, including corruption and computer abuse.

What's more, apart from the theft of electricity, the room where there is a mining machine placed in Naples rose drastically by about 20 degrees, thus endangering the environment and the surrounding infrastructure.

"He not only wasted thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money on this operation but also put infrastructure at risk," said Timothy D. Sini, the prosecutor in the case.

"Cryptocurrency mining requires huge amounts of energy and miners have to figure out how to pay for the electricity and cooling costs. The suspect has a way of doing it, unfortunately at the expense of taxpayers," he said.

The threat of punishment for Naples is quite heavy, he can be jailed for up to 15 years on all charges addressed. Not so lucky to mine Bitcoin, he is now stumped as a result of his actions.
