WhatsApp is currently still beta testing the multi-device feature and has not yet rolled out to all users. But WhatsApp has secretly developed an updated version of the multi-device feature that will bring about a big change.
Previously, as is known, the multi-device feature allows users to access their WhatsApp accounts on WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Desktop and portals without the need to connect to their mobile phones. Now WhatsApp is testing the multi-device 2.0 feature that allows users to access WhatsApp accounts on multiple mobile devices at once.
The presence of this new feature was reported by the WABetaInfo page. Previously, they had shared screenshots of the WhatsApp multi-device display for iOS which allows users to connect a WhatsApp account on the iPhone with the WhatsApp application on the iPad.
Now they share the new development of the feature. With the multi-device 2.0 feature, users will be able to access their WhatsApp account from other mobile devices such as tablets and secondary phones, and not limited to desktop, Portal and main mobile phones.
"It's still unknown whether WhatsApp will provide this feature only for tablets (WhatsApp for iPad and Android tablets) or cover phones, but there is no evidence that they will exclude phones," WABetaInfo said on its blog.
WABetaInfo explained that when a user accesses WhatsApp on a second phone for the first time, WhatsApp will synchronize the chat history. This process is of course done with end-to-end encryption protection.
When the user accesses WhatsApp on the second phone after some time, WhatsApp will download all messages from the server. To complete this process, the main phone does not need to be connected to the internet.
WABetaInfo said this feature is still under development in WhatsApp beta for iOS, but WhatsApp is also developing the same feature for their Android app.
It is not yet known when WhatsApp will publicly release the multi-device 2.0 feature. Given that the first version of the multi-device feature has not yet been rolled out to all users, perhaps the new multi-device 2.0 feature will be launched a few months later.
