Twitter boss mocks Mark Zuckerberg's ambition to build Facebook Metaverse

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has recently championed the metaverse concept, which is predicted to be the future of Facebook and the internet. But it looks like Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey isn't all that happy about the concept.

Metaverse refers to the concept of the internet in the future, where people can gather in virtual spaces using virtual reality and augmented reality devices so that it feels like meeting in person.

Zuckerberg has said several times that the metaverse will be the focus of Facebook in the future. In fact, he wants people to know more about Facebook as a metaverse company than social media.

But Dorsey thought this was a bad idea. Through his tweets on Twitter, Dorsey did not mention Zuckerberg or Facebook directly but he did not hesitate to show his negative sentiments.

Initially, Twitter user @udiWertheimer tweeted about Zuckerberg's ambition to build a metaverse, as well as mentioning the origin of the term. The word metaverse was first mentioned by writer Neal Stephenson in his novel Snow Crash.

In his tweet, @udiWertheimer said in the novel Snow Crash the metaverse is referred to as a virtual world owned by a company where users are treated as citizens under the leadership of a dystopian dictator, as quoted from Business Insider, Thursday (21/10/2021).

At the end of his tweet, @udiWertheimer asked, "What if Neal is right?". Dorsey then responded to the tweet by using a meme-style response, "Narrator He was."

Of course the metaverse that Zuckerberg and Facebook dream of is not as extreme as the description in the novel. Facebook explains that the metaverse they developed aims to make online interactions feel as natural as in-person interactions.

Zuckerberg and Facebook's desire to move from social media to metaverse companies has gone one step further. Earlier this week, Facebook announced it would open 10,000 jobs in Europe to build a metaverse.

The company that oversees Instagram and WhatsApp is also reportedly going to change its name to emphasize its focus on being a metaverse company. Facebook's new name will reportedly be announced next week at the annual Facebook Connect event.

This isn't the first time Dorsey has mocked Zuckerberg and Facebook. When the Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram services crashed together some time ago, Dorsey had several times insinuated Facebook through his tweets.
