Airports in India Seize Thousands of iPhones 13 Worth USD 5 million

Authorities at Mumbai airport, India have seized thousands of 13 iPhones. In total, these devices are worth more than USD 5 million.

The Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is conducting an investigation that led to the seizure of more than 3,600 units of the latest iPhones at the airport. The iPhone 13 unit is being shipped from Hong Kong and imported into India as a 'memory card'.

An attempt to ship large numbers of iPhones with fake labels would likely avoid import duties imposed in those countries.

According to inquiries from DRI after developing proper intelligence, DRI officers inspected two shipments on Friday (26/11).

The shipment arrived from Hong Kong, at the Air Cargo Complex (ACC), Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. In the import document, the item is stated as a 'memory card'.

However, a physical examination revealed that the shipment actually contained a total of 3,646 iPhone 13 phones.

In particular, the inspection even found 12 units of the Google Pixel 6 Pro model as well which were not officially launched in the Indian market and other products including the Apple Watch wearable device.

A large number of iPhones were seized for violating Customs laws and resulting in evasion of duty and also for reasons of potentially impacting the growth of the domestic industry, which was hit by a pandemic last year and is still in the process of recovery.
