Google Introduces Monk Skin Tone Scale To Avoid Bias On Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is just as smart as the data used to train it. From the beginning of the use of artificial intelligence, there was injustice and bias because the data used only took into account certain groups. Among the most notable impacts is artificial intelligence on camera applications that have trouble taking pictures of black people because they are trained with only fair -skinned human data.

So Google introduced the Monk Skin Tone scale (MST) which is more inclusive with 10 individual skin tones that exist in the world. It is the result of Google's collaboration with Dr. Ellis Monk is a professor at Harvard in sociology. It replaces the Fitzpatrick scale which consists of only six tones of skin color. The Fitzpatrick scale is no longer appropriate because it was invented in 1975.

Google will use MST in all of their artificial intelligence products from now on to ensure there are no more issues it doesn’t work due to failing to detect dark -skinned individuals. This is another Google initiative to be more inclusive after last year announced Real Tone on Pixel devices that can take pictures of dark -skinned individuals more accurately.
