The Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Johnny G Plate emphasized that Elon Musk's Starlink satellite is specifically serving corporate customers, aka not for the general public.
PT Telkom Satellite Indonesia (Telkomsat), a subsidiary of Telkom which is a satellite player, purchased the capacity from Starlink, Elon Musk's SpaceX company.
The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) said that Telkomsat had obtained the Landing Rights for the Special Non-Geostationary Satellite (NGSO).
"Not internet service, but Starlink sells satellite capacity to Telkomsat for backhaul services. Internet retail sales rights are not given to Starlink," said the Minister of Communication and Information, Friday (10/6/2022).
The Minister of Communication and Information emphasized that the anchoring rights are exclusive, only for Telkomsat and are used to service the Telkom Group's backhaul needs.
Johnny explained that the issuance of the landing rights would allow Starlink to sell its satellite capacity to Telkomsat to meet the company's backhaul band needs.
"For this reason, Telkomsat builds a gateway station - terrestrial component to receive satellite capacity services from Starlink," he said.
Furthermore, the Minister of Communication and Information added, this service connects fiber optic services in places where it is difficult to build fiber optics.
"This service connection can be done via a microwave link network or satellite capacity (such as Starlink). You can use a Microwave link or an NGSO Satellite," he concluded.
