The anchoring rights granted by the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) to PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) for the use of Starlink have a major mission in digitizing Indonesia.
Kominfo grants Telkomsat landing rights as backhaul corporate users in the operation of the closed fixed network of the Starlink satellite. This means that this network is not accessed en masse, but only for Telkomsat so far.
Telkomsat is exploring ways to synergize with SpaceX, Elon Musk's space company. Until finally in the first quarter of 2021, Telkomsat and SpaceX agreed to a duet in the use of Starlink services.
Telkom views that the collaboration between Telkomsat and SpaceX that has been and is being built to run Starlink services is a strategic step. This is in accordance with the state-owned company's journey plan in accelerating the development of infrastructure and smart digital platforms that are sustainable, economical, and accessible to the entire community.
"With the Starlink anchoring right, we hope that Telkom Group can continue to accelerate the realization of the Indonesian digital environment and society, because we believe that with digitalization, Indonesia will be better in the future," said Telkomsat President Director Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf in a written statement received us, Tuesday (14/6/2022).
With Indonesia's challenging geographical conditions for an even distribution of fiber optic network development programs throughout Indonesia, Starlink is considered the right solution to fill the needs of backhaul networks in areas not yet covered by fiber optics until a more permanent solution is available.
Starlink is a service based on SpaceX's non-geostationary satellite constellation system with a low orbit (LEO / Low Earth Orbit) with an altitude of 500-1,400 km which is capable of providing services with low latency, high throughput and supported by earth station equipment that is easy to install and portable.
This can be a solution to the limitations of the backhaul network in the provision of telecommunications services.
Meanwhile, the anchoring rights for the Starlink satellite are a license for Telkomsat to provide services on an intermediary network that connects the Telkom Group's telecommunications backbone infrastructure with the Base Transceiver Station tower/WiFi tower/access distribution devices via fiber optics.
This service only exists in the operation of a closed fixed network, not for retail services for direct internet access customers.
With the receipt of the Starlink anchorage rights, Telkomsat is increasingly ready to support the equitable distribution program for the development of broadband telecommunications networks in order to reduce the gap in digital services throughout Indonesia.
