OPPO Reno8 Gives A Revolutionary Portrait Experience with These 2 Technologies

The OPPO Reno Series opens a new chapter of portrait photography on smartphones. This is thanks to the revolutionary portrait technology and intelligent Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm embedded in the chipset inside.

Especially the Reno8 Series, which takes the portrait experience to the next level by combining the capabilities of professional hardware and algorithms. The combination of the two allows users to create the perfect portrait image in just one easy step.

First Smartphone with Proprietary Algorithm in Sensor Hardware

Light is one of the important factors in creating sharper, clearer and brighter photos. To that end, OPPO continues to develop innovative solutions to increase light sensitivity.

One of them is by adopting an RGBW pixel design (red, green, blue, and white). In fact, OPPO has been using the RGBW sensor design since 2015 on the OPPO R7 Plus which is able to increase light sensitivity by up to 32%.

At that time, one of the obstacles faced was the limited computing power of traditional image sensors and signal crosstalk between pixels. As a result, images taken using this early-generation RGBW sensor are prone to chromatic aberration and inaccurate colors.

Then in 2019, OPPO's research and development (R&D) team was inspired by Quadra Binning technology which adds two white sub-pixels to each red, green, and blue pixel. As a result, each pixel is able to detect a 'colored' signal and a brighter spectrum. The research team also applied DTI (Deep Trench Isolation) technology so that each pixel can function independently without affecting the others.

After three years of development involving more than 300 imaging engineers, OPPO has finally found a breakthrough in RGBW technology and has obtained 87 patents. Then in September 2019, OPPO collaborated with Sony to develop a new generation of RGBW sensor.

The upgrade and refinement of the Quadra Binning Resistor Transistor Logic (RTL) Algorithm was finally completed in April 2020. Four months later, the Quadra Binning Algorithm was successfully integrated into the RGBW sensor and became a new technology known as the IMX709 Ultra-Sensing Sensor.

During development, OPPO's R&D team also worked closely with chipset manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek to carry out compatibility tests on the IMX709. This is done to ensure sensor compatibility with the best smartphone SoCs. As a result, the IMX709 sensor is able to capture 60% more light and reduce noise by up to 35% compared to the IMX615.

This IMX709 RGBW flagship sensor is then embedded in the OPPO Reno8 selfie camera which has a 32MP resolution. With this combination of technologies, OPPO Reno8 is able to provide clearer and brighter images even in dark environmental conditions.

In order to maximize the capabilities of flagship-class hardware in OPPO Reno8, this device is also equipped with advanced imaging features such as Bokeh Flare Portrait, Selfie HDR, Portrait Retouching, AI Palette, Ultra-Clear 108MP Image, AI Scene Enhancement, Flash Snapshot and others. These various features make it easy for OPPO Reno8 users to be able to capture all the beauty of the world in high-quality portraits with just one easy step.
