Roll Royce Successfully Tests Hydrogen Powered Jet Engine

Rolls Royce successfully tests their first hydrogen-powered jet engine. A Rolls-Royce AE-2100A engine that previously used kerosene fuel was modified to burn hydrogen fuel. This test was carried out by Rolls Royce in collaboration with the low-cost airline EasyJet.

Unlike kerosene which produces carbon dioxide, burning hydrogen will only produce water vapor which does not have a negative impact on the environment. The aviation industry is one of the world's biggest contributors to air pollution. Over the past few years, the development of more environmentally friendly fuel and electric powered airplanes has progressed.

Testing is still in the early stages to see the shortcomings and early advantages of hydrogen fuel. Among those that have been identified before is the need for a heavier fuel storage system and the thrust produced is not as high as using kerosene. All of these need to be resolved before hydrogen can become an alternative.
