Lawson Stores In Japan Start Using Staff In The Form Of Avatars

Japan is facing the issue of labor shortage due to low birth rate. To combat this problem, the use of robots and technology is seen as the solution. Convenience store chain Lawson, which previously used robots controlled remotely by workers to restock, is now launching stores run by staff in the form of avatars.

A new chain of Lawson Green stores opened in Tokyo last week. It focuses on more environmentally friendly living and goods. The staff controls the avatar character of Sorato if they are male and Aoi if they are female. According to Lawson, a store that still has staff despite its shape is necessary to provide the best service to customers.

Customers can get help from staff by interacting with avatars placed on screens inside the store. Lawson Green will also not offer plastic bags with the self-service concept. Fresh food is also not sold to reduce stock wastage. A total of 100 staff-operated Lawson Greens in avatar form will open in Japan by 2025.
