Apple is rumored to be releasing its first AR/VR headset this year. However, the device that was predicted to be a replacement product for the iPhone was actually feared to become a failed product.
Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman said some Apple executives believed the headset, which might be named Reality Pro, would be the product that replaces the iPhone as Apple's flagship product despite its exorbitant price -- around $3,000.
Apple designed a mixed reality device that can be used all day and at any time. This device can also be used without having to connect to a laptop or cell phone.
The first mixed reality device from Apple is predicted to carry a number of new technologies, including dual 4K displays to a flexible OLED screen on the front that shows the user's eyes. This headset is also equipped with dozens of cameras that can analyze the user's eye and body movements as well as the surrounding environment.
But behind this technological sophistication, Apple's headset also has some drawbacks. Gurman said the battery only lasted two hours on a single charge, could not be used optimally outdoors, had limited content and features, and a design that was considered uncomfortable.
Also, by launching AR/VR headsets Apple is entering an area that is still immature, unlike the phone, tablet or smartwatch market. Gurman also claims that Apple doesn't have a 'killer app' for the device that could attract users' attention.
Gurman then compared Apple Reality Pro to the high-end headsets on the market: Microsoft HoloLens and Meta Quest Pro. Both are also priced quite high and are referred to as failed products.
"Apple devices will be fancier and more sophisticated than existing products. But they still share the same challenges as Microsoft and Meta: They're expensive, use is limited, and most consumers are wary," Gurman wrote in his newsletter. , as quoted from Bloomberg, Monday (30/1/2023).
To prevent the Reality Pro headset from becoming a failure, Gurman said Apple must be able to create a better user experience than what is already available on the iPhone and iPad. In addition, the price can also be made cheaper and increase the battery capacity.
Apple Reality Pro will reportedly begin mass production in March 2023. This product is likely to be launched at the WWDC 2023 event next summer.
