First Look – Reno8 T Series Are Almost Identical Twins With Different Hardware

The concept of a smartphone with a quality finish and imaging system shows that Oppo is maturing in making its products have attractive value. For example, like the Reno series which is already famous for its camera capabilities that contain various photography and videography features. Sharing more, Oppo is now preparing to come with some new updates for the series through the Oppo Reno8 T series.

The use of the tagline "The Portrait Expert" gives a clear impression that it is still characterized by a smartphone with good camera capabilities. The new update also revealed its launch date for the local market which is scheduled to take place on February 7. However, we had the opportunity to access the device early to take a closer look at its offerings, both in terms of design and key specifications.

Design & Screen

There was no unboxing session provided this time as we were only given a first-hand look at the smart device. In terms of design, Reno8 T 5G and Reno8 T 4G do not show significant differences between each other. All devices have rounded aluminum sides that form the main frame. It is also comfortable to hold without the issue of the device easily slipping out of the hand, especially for the Reno8 T 4G with Sunset Orange color. This is due to the fact that this device comes with a different style, and even stands out enough with a leather-based finish in creating a different touch. However, it does not mean that the other color options are completely unattractive to our eyes.

All of them are simply pleasing to the eye with a modern and minimalist design that uses shiny materials. For example, Reno8 T 5G with Sunrise Gold color equipped with Oppo Glow design. Through it, it uses a dual-matte finish that sparkles like a diamond on the back of the device. It is quite beautiful and the reflected color changes according to the viewing angle.

Not only that, this design is also said to be able to reduce the issue of fingerprint dirt easily sticking to make the device stay clean all the time. But this concept is not something new for Oppo because this has also been used on some Reno devices before such as Reno5, Reno6 and Reno7.

Furthermore, this back panel also shows two camera bumps with a tri-camera system for both devices. One large lens dominates the camera bump at the top with two more lenses placed separately in the bump below. Also included is an LED Flash that has been slightly modified in position, in addition to the camera system that is also equipped with an Oppo Glow system similar to the one found on the Reno8 Z 5G. It can flash when there are notifications and incoming phone calls. This is especially useful for those who don't want to miss phone calls when the device is set to silent mode.

Further the front screen for both devices is entirely from the AMOLED panel family with FHD+ resolution. But the advantage must be given to the 5G variant when the AMOLED screen used has 10-bit color support. In addition to also loading an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz at maximum resolution. High refresh rate support can also be found on the 4G variant of the device, but is limited to up to 90Hz. If placed side by side, the difference can also be seen in the size and type of front screen used.

A 6.7-inch curved screen on both sides and a hole in the middle is used on the Reno8 T 5G. At the same time, the balanced bezel size on all four sides also feels suitable for users who crave symmetry. Meanwhile, the Reno8 T 4G screen is smaller with a size of 6.4-inches and a kind of flat with the existence of a small hole on the left side. The presence of a slightly thicker chin compared to the other sides can also be found on this device. But this situation is also often the case for a mid-range device on the market today.

Apart from the front screen, what are the other design differences between the Reno8 T 5G and the Reno8 T 4G? First of all the position of the SIM slot placed on the lower side for the 5G variant. Further, it can be found on the right side for the 4G variant. The speaker placement is on the right side for the 5G variant, then moving to the left side for the Reno8 T 4G.

Both also support stereo audio systems, but the advantage is given to the 4G variant which also features a 3.5mm audio jack. This at the same time gives added value to the device which also provides additional convenience for users who still depend on wired earphones.

Other standard button layouts for both devices are the same, where the power button can be found on the right side of both devices. Next, the opposite side houses the audio adjustment buttons with a solid construction. The USB-C port connection is also used on both smart devices placed on the lower side. Overall the design of these two devices is simple, practical and balanced with the presence of premium device criteria. The design of the two camera bumps has also been slightly modified compared to some previous devices to make it neater.

Processing Chips & Software

The most drastic difference of course lies in the processing chip support. The device with a built-in 5G network is equipped with a Snapdragon 695 chip which is a mid-range processor with 6nm technology. It was launched at the end of 2021 and is the same chip used in the previous Reno8 Z. Furthermore, the Reno8 T 4G is equipped with a MediaTek Helio G99 chip.

This is paired with 8GB of RAM memory and 256GB of internal storage on both devices. For those who feel that RAM may not be enough, this device comes with virtual memory support of up to 8GB of RAM that takes up some of the storage. The short trial means we haven't had time to do any benchmark tests and play any previews so far. However, we will share this in a future review article when one of the devices arrives at the our lab later.

In terms of software, there is no difference between the two devices with support for the latest Android 13-based ColorOS 13 launcher. In general, the ColorOS launcher can be said to have a good reputation in terms of smoothness and ease of use. We say this because the experience is still the same as other Oppo devices.

For those of you who have used ColorOS devices before, the time it takes to get used to these devices only takes a short time. Also included, a theme customization function and a number of settings that can be changed according to the user's wishes.

Camera Settings

Another most drastic difference is the 108MP main sensor (Samsung HM6) used on the Reno8 T 5G. It is also advertised as the first device under the Reno series to feature such camera support. This is in contrast to the Reno8 T 4G which uses a 100MP main sensor. Next, no ultra-wide sensor is provided, instead these devices pack two 2MP sensors for depth and macro purposes.

Also included is digital zoom support up to 20X, in addition to bringing the microlens camera feature that was previously found on the Find X3 Pro model. Furthermore, these devices also still maintain a number of photography and videography features like previous generations. For example Bokeh Flare Portrait, AI Retouching, Selfie HDR and AI Color Portrait. But unfortunately, you need to know that there is no MariSilicon X chip support loaded on these two smart devices.

So is this a good or bad thing? On paper, the device focuses more on the portrait image recording feature. Therefore, practically it does not have an extreme bad effect. Personally, too, the various additional functions provided go a long way towards producing adequate images for most situations. Meanwhile, there is no difference for the selfie camera settings between the devices as a 32MP sensor is used through it.

Battery Capacity

Next, no big difference can also be seen in terms of the device's battery capacity. The Reno8 T 4G is only 20mAh larger than the Reno8 T 5G. The total amount of battery on the Reno 8T 4G is 5000mAh, while the 5G variant packs a 4800mAh battery. For recharging, both use a USB-C port connection that can be charged through the 67W charging system on the Reno8 T 5G. Furthermore, the Reno8 T 4G comes with 33W fast charging.

Conclusion

Here's a sneak peek of our first look at both of Oppo's new devices. At a glance no difference can be seen in terms of design with an Oppo A78 5G. In general too, the Reno8 T 5G is just a Reno8 Z re-presented in a body size and an improved camera sensor.

However, once again we say that the overall design of these two devices is still practical and balanced with the criteria of a premium device. However, it would be much better if Oppo offers the Reno9 series which is felt to be more attractive. No information about the selling price has been revealed so far, everything will be answered after the launch on February 7.
