The concept of the metaverse is still not widely understood by many people, even by tech savvy people. But Meta believes that this platform will be as important as a smartphone.
This was stated by Chris Cox, Meta's chief product officer, who spoke in a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "One day computing platforms will be as important as a smartphone in our lives," said Cox.
He also said that Meta has been trying to make virtual reality product lines for almost a decade, and they are trying to make this product line affordable, accessible, and impressive, we were quoted as saying from Techspot, Saturday (20/1/2023).
The big idea is to incorporate this platform into various areas, from social experiences, fitness, gaming, medicine, and drug development. Meta also wants to use this platform to design cars and shoes.
Meta's belief in this metaverse seems inconsistent with the thinking of many people. For example, there are analysts who predict that all metaverse businesses will close by 2025.
Then a survey of 10,000 teenagers in 2022 produced a report that said half of the teenagers surveyed were not interested in the metaverse. In fact, some Meta employees are still unsure about the success of the metaverse.
One indication that the future of the Metaverse platform is still in question is the sales of VR devices that have declined during 2022. In addition, Meta was left by one of the officials who was a VR guru in December 2022, namely John Carmack.
In the panel discussion, Cox also reiterated Mark Zuckerberg's view that has often been expressed, namely that the metaverse's biggest problem is the lack of interoperability with other platforms.
"I think the internet is a great way to imagine the metaverse, because different parts of the internet are very coherent with each other," Cox explained.
Meta's ambition for the metaverse is no joke. Since the start of early 2021 they have already lost USD 16 billion for the development of the metaverse. However, Zuck is adamant that this investment will yield results for at least the next decade.
