Riot Games' League of Legends Hacked, Hackers Demand Ransom

Bad luck befell Riot Games. The video game giant was hacked and the hacker demanded a ransom.

There are at least two games that are victims, namely League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics (TFT) as well as an anti-cheat platform. It is known that the source code of both games has been stolen.

Quoted by us from Techcrunch, Thursday (26/1/2023), the code taken by the hacker contains several features that have not been released by Riot Games. The burglary eventually led to extortion, where the owner was asked to send money worth USD 10 million.

The hacker group, which was not named, promised not to share all the information they got to the public and to delete it. But with a note, this Valorant game developer is willing to provide the requested money.

In fact, they also offer some kind of information, regarding how hacking can occur. Including providing advice to Riot Games, to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.

"We understand how important this data is and the impact it will have on League of Legends and Valorant, if this data is released to the public. Therefore, we are asking for a small thing which is USD 10 million," the hacker wrote.

Nevertheless, Riot Games took a firm stance and refused to pay the ransom. They prefer to cooperate with law enforcement, in an effort to solve this hacking problem.

"Our security team and globally recognized external consultants are continuously evaluating the attack and auditing our systems. We have also notified law enforcement and are actively working with them, as we investigate the attack and the group behind it," wrote Riot Games.
