Since Face ID was introduced with the iPhone X, many have complained about the large notch making the screen look ugly. But as usual, Android manufacturers followed suit and the majority of iPhone users no longer care about the large notch. The notch has been replaced with a large hole but now there are reports that a new Face ID system is being developed to be placed under the screen.
Rumors have emerged from China that the Face ID system that places the camera and 3D scanning sensor under the screen is being tested for the iPhone 18. This will also eliminate the large camera hole that is currently used. This system is also believed to be developed for Apple's first foldable iPhone which is expected to arrive in just two years.
The launch of the iPhone with the under-screen Face ID system has been predicted to arrive since 2021 after under-screen cameras began to be used by Chinese manufacturers. At this time, all under-screen camera systems such as those on the Red Magic and Z Fold devices still do not offer satisfactory image quality.
Although the tests have been started by Apple, it does not mean that the under-screen Face ID system will be used on devices sold later. Apple is known for its habit of filing patents for various innovations but not using them in actual devices because the technology is not considered mature enough.
