Do you still remember Project Starline that was developed during the pandemic? This three-dimensional video calling and teleconferencing system was finally officially launched as Google Beam this morning at Google I/O 2025 in collaboration with HP.
Six cameras placed around the Beam screen with artificial intelligence (AI) will use visual input to produce 3D video that will then interact with other Beam users. With Beam, the person being contacted appears to be really in front of your eyes and they can be seen from various angles. The cameras on the Beam produce this 3D effect in real time.
One new feature that exists on Beam but not on Starline is the ability to do automatic language translation. Beam uses Google Translate and Meet technology to automatically switch the language of the conversation to a language that the caller understands using the original caller's voice. In the demo shown, two-way conversations in English and Spanish were possible even if both Beam users were.
Google Beam will begin selling to interested customers by the end of 2025. Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, Hackensack Meridian Health, Duolingo and Recruit are among the early customers who have confirmed they want to use Beam in their workplaces.
