When talking about learning a foreign language, some of the services that are often mentioned include Duolingo, Babbel, Rosetta Stone and so on. Google has a translation tool called Google Translate that can be used in several ways, such as text input, through camera applications such as Google Lens and so on, and it is very useful for situations where you need instant language translation.
Google recently introduced Little Language Lessons, a foreign language learning service that combines Google's Gemini AI service and a variety of existing Google services to allow you to learn a new language more naturally.
Little Language Lessons is divided into three parts, namely Tiny Lesson, Slang Hang and Word Cam. Tiny Lesson allows you to learn phrases to use quickly, such as asking for directions, ordering food and so on.
Using Gemini, users can generate phrases that can be used for short conversations with locals in a language they understand.
The second is Slang Hang, which can teach you a little bit about the language accent that allows you to chat more naturally, and not too standard. You can use Gemini to generate dialogues that use “market language” in your dialogues, which usually takes time for you to understand the nuances of a foreign language before you can use it in everyday conversation.
Third is Word Cam, and this can be seen as a rebranding of Google Lens which uses your smart device’s camera to not only translate text, but also label objects in photos taken with their names in a foreign language.
Through the Google Developers site, they have also introduced several prompts that can be used in Gemini to generate language translation text for words and phrases that you want to learn quickly.
Google says that Little Language Lesson will not replace learning a language in a classroom with a certified teacher, but if you want to learn a few specific phrases for a trip abroad, it can help you communicate with the locals.
