Every era comes to an end. Manchester United, once wild and arrogant, has now fallen to the hands of the ASEAN football team. Mawi, once a music phenomenon, is no longer known to Gen Z. Blogserius has been swept away by TikTok, which erodes the intellect. The next era to come to the end of the line is Sony, which no longer manufactures its own smartphones.
According to a report by Sumahodigest, two Sony factories in Chonburi and Bangkady in Thailand and Wuxi in China no longer list smartphones as manufactured products. This has been done since mid-May and indicates that the Xperia 1 VII is their first phone manufactured by an OEM.
The smartphone landscape has changed drastically compared to the days of Sony Ericsson. Sony now holds less than 1% of the global smartphone market in 2024. Device sales are also starting to be limited to certain markets and the models offered each year have also been reduced.
