Hundreds of millions have been spent by Meta to lure employees from other artificial intelligence (AI) companies to join the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) team. Mark Zuckerberg has already assembled an “Avengers” team consisting of the people who created ChatGPT and several powerful GPT models in OpenAI. Now Zuckerberg has announced the construction of a Hyperion data center that is not only high-powered but also the size of Galactus.
In a post uploaded to Facebook, Zuckerberg said that Meta is building a Hyperion data center that will have a total power of 5GW when completed. Before Hyperion, the Prometheus data center will be operational in 2026 with a power of 1GW.
This extremely high energy demand is why Meta and major US technology companies have invested in nuclear power plant companies and the development of small modular nuclear reactors (MSRs) in recent years. Meanwhile, in China, molten salt thorium reactors, the largest solar farms and tokamaks are being developed to generate unlimited energy.
These are just two of several supercluster data centers that Meta will build, each about the size of Manhattan Island in New York. Hyperion will be built in Louisiana with a nearby campus that will have 4 million square feet of floor space.
Zuckerberg also announced that Meta will spend hundreds of billions of dollars building data centers for MSL. All of this is to ensure that Meta will be the first company in the world to successfully produce artificial general intelligence (AGI).
