The pandemic has forced us to hold meetings and get-togethers using video conferencing apps. Even though we've been using Google Meet or Zoom for five years, many people are still experiencing buzzing audio issues, especially when two people are using the apps simultaneously in the same room.
This "audio feedback" effect eliminates the buzzing or hissing audio that hurts the ears of other video conferencing participants. Today, Google Meet is introducing a new feature called Companion Mode. It automatically detects whether other participants in the same video conferencing session are sitting near you. This is done by emitting ultrasonic audio to nearby devices.
With Companion Mode, this buzzing audio issue is easily resolved. At this point, Companion Mode is only available to Google Meet users via Chrome, with the setting having to be manually activated by the user.
