WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature for iOS devices that allows users to import profile pictures directly from Facebook and Instagram. This feature makes it easier for users to synchronize their identities across the Meta platform without having to download or set pictures manually. Interestingly, the same functionality was previously tested on Android devices. Although the purpose is similar, the settings interface for this feature on Android and iOS features a different design.
This profile picture import feature allows users to select images from their social media accounts, such as Facebook and Instagram, when updating their WhatsApp profile. This option complements existing functions including uploading from the gallery, taking a new picture, creating an image using Meta AI or setting a custom avatar. This integration also provides convenience to users who tend to use a consistent profile picture across various social media applications, especially in the Meta ecosystem.
The method of use is also easy as users need to link their WhatsApp account to the Meta Accounts Center, which is a control center that coordinates the relationship between all platforms in the Meta ecosystem including Facebook and Instagram. This feature also does not affect WhatsApp's privacy protection since its integration is limited to optional functions such as photo and avatar customization only.
All forms of links are optional and disabled by default to give users full control over their digital identity management. Currently, this feature is only available to WhatsApp Beta users for iOS devices and is expected to be expanded to more users in stages over the coming weeks.
