OpenAI Is Developing Smart Glasses, Speakers, and Pins

OpenAI previously confirmed that they are developing an artificial intelligence (AI) device that is not a smartphone. To realize the dream of producing their own hardware, OpenAI took over Jony Ive's io company.

In a recent report by The Information, OpenAI is now reportedly developing a screenless smart speaker as its first product. Contracts with Luxshare and Goertek have already been signed before production begins. Both companies are suppliers to several Apple products.

After smart speakers, OpenAI is considering producing glasses, audio recorders, and smart pins. The smart glasses segment will become increasingly popular next year with Meta currently in the lead but will be followed by Samsung with Apple also believed to be interested in offering it. OpenAI's first physical AI product is expected to be launched in late 2026 or early 2027.

Several of the first AI products such as the AI Pin and Rabbit R1 all failed a few months after launch due to issues with unsatisfactory hardware and software. Meta shows that the market for AI glasses existed more than a decade after Google Glass was discontinued.
