GitHub is one of the world’s largest programming project sharing platforms, and they recently shared some details about the platform’s growth throughout 2025 so far.
This year alone, GitHub says that more than 180 million programmers have joined GitHub, more than one every second this year alone. A total of 630 million programming projects have been started on the platform since it opened, and a total of 1.12 billion contributions of energy and expertise have been given to those projects.
But perhaps what is most interesting is the programming language used on GitHub. They say that the most widely used programming language on the platform is TypeScript, surpassing Python and JavaScript as the two most popular programming languages.
Interestingly, TypeScript comes with a syntax similar to JavaScript and was developed by Microsoft itself. It has surpassed both programming languages as the most used language on GitHub since August 2025.
These figures are taken from the Octoverse report which records activity on GitHub over the date range of September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2025.
GitHub explains that this is because TypeScript can be used to develop the front end and back end of a project using almost the same syntax, and because of this, it has become the programming language of choice for many modern programmers,
However, Python is still a popular programming language as it is still widely used for the development of artificial intelligence and data science services and software.
