Intel and BOE Collaborate to Introduce 1Hz Refresh Rate Screen Display

Displays with dynamic refresh rates are nothing new. But typically these refresh rates are still considered quite high (40Hz and above) and still eat into battery life.

Recently, semiconductor chip developer Intel along with display manufacturer BOE have reportedly collaborated to develop a screen display that comes with a refresh rate as low as 1Hz. This means that the screen content will only be refreshed every second, and this helps in reducing battery consumption.

This display is seen using Multi Frequency Display technology that will display static content such as images and text at a refresh rate of 1Hz, and will increase automatically when the screen is scrolled or shows dynamic content.

In the meantime, they have also introduced SmartPower HDR technology which also allows the display to display HDR video content more efficiently, by increasing and decreasing the display brightness rate depending on the HDR video content being displayed. According to the two companies, the use of a 1Hz MFD screen display with the combination of SmartPower HDR technology can help reduce battery consumption by 65 percent and will increase battery life even further. It is expected that this display technology will be shown on Intel Panther Lake laptops which will be shown as early as the CES 2026 event in Las Vegas in early January.
