AMD today made a rather surprising announcement for those still using the AMD Radeon 5000 and Radeon 6000 series graphics cards that use RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 graphics chips.
They said that graphics cards in the series will no longer receive day one driver update support, and will focus on software updates for RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 graphics cards (AMD Radeon 7000, 9000) to ensure that they can play the latest games without problems.
With the AMD Software Adrenaline Edition update version 25.10.1, it is the last time that these RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 graphics cards will receive updates for modern games. This update brings performance improvements for the recently released Battlefield 6 and Bloodlines 2.
This does not mean that RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 graphics cards will not be updated again. These graphics cards will still receive security updates and bug fixes, but will no longer receive additional updates for future games.
Interestingly, AMD has not said anything about the APU chips that will use the graphics processing chip. One popular console that is expected to be affected by this decision is the Steam Deck which uses AMD APUs with RDNA 2 graphics chips.
