Sarawak to Test “Grab Sampan” Concept – Digitizing River Transport System

The Sarawak state government has said it is considering the introduction of the “Grab Sampan” project, and will begin a six-month pilot project for the concept. The project will be tested through a partnership with Grab Malaysia, where users can book transport via the river.

For the purpose of this pilot project, it will be implemented starting from the Kuching Riverbank, and will involve eight locations to pick up and drop off passengers. Electric boats will be used, which will come with digital booking support and cashless payments – like other Grab offerings.

This move is also expected to ease transportation in the state. If all goes well through this pilot project, it is not impossible for its introduction and implementation to be expanded in the state.
