Deputy Minister: Game Restrictions Not the Solution to Child Safety Issues

Deputy Minister for Communications, Teo Nie Ching, stressed that blocking platforms like Roblox is not enough to address child safety issues. Instead, he stressed that in-game protection features and comprehensive cooperation between platform providers and stakeholders are key measures that need to be prioritized.

He explained that blocking access would only stop games, not ensure safety, while referring to discussions with Suhakam on the need for stronger protection.

Previously, the government was reported to be considering a ban on Roblox following the tragic incident involving two siblings in Kampung Parit Nipah Laut, Batu Pahat, where exposure to the game was alleged to have influenced aggressive actions.

In a related development, Minister for Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh announced that Roblox had given assurances to strengthen safety through the use of AI and human monitoring, as well as collaborating on data sharing and regulatory compliance.

In addition, Roblox itself has implemented a new safety policy by requiring age verification for all users before they can access the chat function, thus increasing protection for children.

The requirement to block children's access to certain platforms, particularly social media, has already been implemented in Australia. Malaysia is expected to follow suit by early 2026 as a step to strengthen protections for children's online safety.
