Fujifilm Updates Ultrium 10 Magnetic Tape Storage with 40TB Capacity

Magnetic tape storage is a long-term digital storage used to store data that is rarely accessed and used, and can typically last for decades without any degradation to the data and the magnetic tape components themselves.

In the middle of this year, Fujifilm introduced the Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 10 magnetic tape storage which came with a data storage capacity of 30TB, and now, has updated the storage with a 40TB capacity option without any change to the storage size.

Fujifilm has improved its “fine hybrid magnetic particles” technology and used aramid material to produce a new magnetic film that allows this storage to store more data without having to change the physical size of the storage media.

Theoretically, this storage technology is capable of storing as much as 100TB of data in it, but this depends on how many lengths of magnetic tape can be loaded into a single physical frame of the storage media.

Also updated is the operating temperature of this tape. The 30GB LTO Ultrium 10 model can operate in a temperature range of 15 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius, while the 40GB model can operate in a temperature range of 15 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius.

Fujifilm says that the 40GB Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 10 magnetic tape storage will begin selling to long-term data storage (cold storage) customers starting January 2026.
