The Oscars are one of the most prestigious events in the film industry. FINAS has been targeting local films to be among the nominees for the Oscars for the past few years but have yet to succeed, but Tan Sir Michelle Yeoh became the first Malaysian to win the award in the best leading actress category in 2023.
After having to be watched on TV for a long time, it will be streamed exclusively on YouTube starting in 2029. YouTube and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have signed an agreement to exclusively show the Oscars globally from 2029 to 2033. So far, the broadcasting rights have been held by ABC, with viewers in Malaysia only able to watch it via paid satellite channels.
In addition to the rights to broadcast the Oscars, YouTube will also publish red carpet events, behind-the-scenes content and Google Arts & Culture will receive access to the Academy Museum collection. They will also help the Academy Museum digitize their collection for future generations to see.
