SoftBank Group Corp. today announced that it has completed its $40 billion investment in OpenAI that was announced in March. Today, the remaining $22.5 billion investment was completed, with Softbank now owning about 11% of OpenAI.
The company made its first investment in April 2025 of $7.5 billion through SoftBank Vision Fund 2 (“SVF2”), followed by $11 billion from third-party investors. To raise the funds, Softbank sold its entire stake in 3.5 million NVIDIA shares for $5.8 billion.
The large investment is to fulfill its commitment to build the Stargate data center, which OpenAI says will ensure the United States remains a superpower in the world of artificial intelligence. It is also OpenAI’s move to ensure that the investment is profitable, with OpenAI expected to file for an IPO next year.
