About a week after OpenAI accused Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) companies of stealing US-made AI technology through distillation techniques, Anthropic has also alleged the same thing happened to them. Anthropic directly named DeepSeek, Minimax, and Moonshot – three Chinese AI companies involved in using distillation techniques on Claude to improve the AI models they were developing.
A total of 24,000 fake accounts were allegedly used with over 16 million interactions with Claude by the three companies. Through distillation, new models are developed by imitating or reverse engineering at a much lower cost and time. These new models will then have the same capabilities as Claude.
Anthropic called for cooperation between AI companies, governments, and the global community to address this threat. They also warned that the campaigns are growing in sophistication.
