HP IQ Is AI That Runs Directly on a Computer Based on AI Pin Technology

The Humane AI Pin was one of the first attempts to market physical hardware for artificial intelligence (AI). But issues of difficulty to use, low performance, heat and short battery life thwarted it until Humane was sold to HP. AI Pin has been buried but the technology developed by Humane is now being relaunched as HP IQ.

HP IQ is an AI chatbot that HP is including in several of its computer models this week. It runs directly from the computer using the processing power provided by the CPU without the need for an internet connection. All user data is processed directly from the computer except for information that requires internet reference such as sports scores, weather forecasts and the latest news.

The HP IQ uses a GPT‑OSS 20B model and is based on the CosmOS operating system that AI Pin uses. This is not surprising since the HP IQ team is led by Imran Chaudhri who is one of the founders of Humane. Therefore it can perform simple tasks such as document summarization, audio transcription, managing claims and calling Uber services on behalf of users.

At this point, HOL IQ is only offered on commercial laptops such as the HP EliteBook X G2 and will be enabled via a spring 2026 update. HP's consumer laptops are expected to receive this feature starting in 2027.
