Meta has been ordered to pay a $375 million penalty by a New Mexico court for misleading users about child safety on its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms. The jury found Meta liable for endangering children and exposing them to sexual material and contact with sexual predators.
It is the first time a state in the United States has successfully sued Meta over a child safety issue. On the same day, Meta and Google were found liable for causing social media addiction by a California court. The $375 million fine was reached after taking into account thousands of violations, each of which could result in a fine of $5,000.
Meta denies the allegations and plans to appeal, saying it has worked hard to protect young users online.
