The concept of agentic AI is not new. In short, with the technology, an AI system can execute an instruction or action without requiring additional input or confirmation from the user, other than the original instruction.
Local banks CIMB Bank and RHB Bank recently demonstrated a pilot project using Mastercard Agent Pay’s AI agent to confirm payment for a trip from KLIA airport to KL Sentral via Hoppa’s ride-hailing and limousine services.
In short, the user simply instructs the AI agent built into the app to make the booking, and it then books and pays for it without any additional input or confirmation from the user.
The booking and agent transaction was facilitated by the CardInfoLink AI agent, which is connected to Hoppa’s airport taxi and limousine network. The transaction used a token authenticated by Mastercard Passkey Payment, which promises strong customer authentication and data protection.
While this pilot validates the technical and operational implementation of agent transactions in Malaysia, commercial implementation will be rolled out in phases. Mastercard will work with local banks and partners to educate consumers about agent commerce, helping them engage with AI-powered payments safely and confidently.
