Meta and Google Reportedly Fail to Comply with Social Media Age Restrictions in Indonesia

The Indonesian government has summoned Meta and Google for allegedly failing to comply with social media age restrictions for children. The action was taken following concerns about content that could negatively impact young users, especially after the implementation of Government Regulation (PP) Tunas which came into effect on March 28, 2026. The regulation sets a minimum age limit of 16 for users of high-risk digital platforms.

Indonesian authorities insist that social media providers must comply with local laws to protect the safety of children on digital platforms. However, Meta and Google were found to have failed to comprehensively implement age restrictions on their respective platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube. As a result, both companies have been summoned for further investigation regarding their non-compliance.

Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to stricter measures, including banning or blocking access to platforms in Indonesia. In fact, the ministry stated that Meta and Google have been opposed to this policy from the beginning. So far, the two providers have yet to provide an official response, although they previously claimed to have introduced protective measures for young users.

In addition to Meta and Google, other platforms such as TikTok and Roblox have also been identified as high-risk. Both have received warning letters and have been asked to improve their compliance with the new rules. Interestingly, only two platforms, X and Bigo, have so far been found to be fully compliant by implementing access restrictions for underage users in Indonesia.
