Four years ago at CES, BMW showed the BMW iX Flow concept car that can change color because the body is covered with a monochrome e-ink screen panel. This was later followed by the BMW i Vision Dee concept with colored e-ink panels in 2023. After a long time without an update on this project, the BMW iX3 Flow Edition was also shown at the Beijing Auto Show.
The BMW iX3 Flow Edition is still equipped with e-ink panels but only on the front hood. When not activated, the hood looks like a regular gray vehicle. The BMW iX3 Flow Edition's e-ink panel can be changed to display several tones of white to gray and it can also be programmed to display animations.
Like the two previous concept vehicles, the BMW iX3 Flow Edition is also still just an experiment showing how e-ink technology can be used on the body of a vehicle. Among them is the animation on the hood that changes according to the music heard in the cabin.
In emergency vehicles, it can display information to surrounding vehicles. At the same time, if the vehicle is parked in an open area, the car can be changed to white to reduce the heat in the cabin.
