Yesterday, it went viral on X when user @ros_ie9 showed that Canva's Magic Layers feature, which uses artificial intelligence (AI), removed the word Palestine without asking. A pro-Palestine poster uploaded to Canva was changed to a pro-Ukraine poster. After the issue went viral, other users also confirmed that the same thing happened when they also uploaded graphics with the word Palestine.
In a Gizmodo report, a Canva spokesperson confirmed that the issue occurred and said that it was investigated and would be fixed immediately. Canva also apologized for any inconvenience and would fix it. At the same time, the company launched an internal audit to find the cause and improve the testing process.
The existence of bias in AI models has been an issue since LLM began to be widely used three years ago. The main chatbot went viral for refusing to comment when asked to give its opinion on the Israeli-Palestinian issue and criticizing various religions except Judaism.
