The Google app for desktop was launched today for computers running Windows 10 and Windows 11 worldwide. The app brings Google Search functionality directly to the desktop without users having to open Chrome first.
The app is launched by pressing the Alt+Space key, which will open a search box. It can then search the web, Google Drive, applications installed on the PC, and files on the computer. This feature is very similar to Spotlight on macOS computers, which can also perform global searches locally.
In addition, the app can also perform artificial intelligence (AI)-based searches, Google Lens integration for image search, perform text/image translation, and perform contextual searches of what is currently displayed on the PC screen.
At this time, the Google app for desktop is only offered on Windows, with a macOS version in development.
