OpenAI Opens AI Lab, Invests S$300 Million in Singapore

OpenAI has announced its OpenAI for Singapore initiative, investing S$300 million (~RM 930 million) and opening its first Applied AI Lab outside the US. They are working with Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) to support Singapore’s national AI strategy.

The S$300 million allocated is for three strategic focuses: supporting Singaporean organizations using frontier artificial intelligence (AI), developing local AI talent, and extending the benefits of AI to people and businesses across the country.

Meanwhile, through the Applied AI Lab, OpenAI will create 200 technical roles including frontline engineers over the next few years. These engineers will work directly with companies to solve complex problems and connect frontier research with real-world applications.

There’s no reason why Singapore was chosen to be the location of OpenAI’s first AI lab outside the US. But a report in the Business Times last month noted that Singapore has the highest number of Claude users per capita in the world. 80% of Singaporeans also admit to using AI every day while 93% of students admit to using it to revise and do class assignments.
