China's LineShine has overtaken El Capitan as the world's fastest supercomputer in the latest Top500 list. The supercomputer clocked 2.198 ExaFlop/s in the HPL benchmark test, making it the first system to surpass 2 ExaFlops using only CPUs. El Capitan now falls to second place with a processing power of 1.809 ExaFlop/s.
Built at the Shenzhen National Supercomputer Center (NSCS), Lineshine is equipped with 13.79 million CPU cores with 303 locally-made LX2 chips and uses the Kylin OS operating assistant. With Lineshine now in operation, there are five supercomputers with ExaFlop capabilities in the world. El Capitan, Frontier and Aurora are located in the United States, while Jupiter Booster is located in Germany.
It is not known what tasks LineShine performs for China. But El Capitan was developed specifically to simulate nuclear weapons explosions, weapons safety and nuclear weapons modernization tasks for the future needs of the United States. From time to time it will also be used for scientific testing purposes. Below is a list of the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world.
