Government Proposes Enforcing Maximum Rate of Road Offence Fines to RM500 Starting 2029

The government is now seen planning to enforce the maximum rate for road offence fines from the existing RM300 to RM500. This is expected to be enforced starting January 1, 2029.

The Minister of Transport stated that the actual rate is subject to the type of offence and the level of seriousness of the offence, the period for completing the compound and several others – however, with this change, it will increase the maximum limit of the compound to RM500. This measure is also said not to burden the people or increase government revenue, but rather to increase compliance among road users.

This measure is also expected to encourage more responsible and careful drivers on the road. Among the offences expected to be subject to a fine or compound of RM500 include not displaying the vehicle registration number correctly, using a vehicle without a valid motor vehicle license, driving without a license, driving above the speed limit, failing to obey traffic signals, and several others.
