Qualcomm Reportedly in Talks to Design Custom Chips for ByteDance

In recent months and years, Qualcomm has been seen making many business decisions that show they are starting to shift their focus away from manufacturing processor chips for smart devices only.

Yesterday we reported that the processor chip design company is in talks to acquire AI chip design startup Modular Inc. Most recently, it is being reported that Qualcomm is also in talks to help design custom chips for digital platform company ByteDance.

As we know, ByteDance is currently seen as being in the process of designing their own AI processor chips to reduce their dependence on large processor chip manufacturers such as NVIDIA, Intel and AMD.

Qualcomm is seen as the world's most advanced smart device processor chip supplier, and holds a large percentage in terms of market share, but competition from other companies such as MediaTek, Samsung, Huawei and so on seems to have made the company's leadership pillars start thinking about ways to diversify their processor chip offerings into other technology sectors such as AI and automotive more seriously.

Not many details are known about the discussions at this time, and whether Qualcomm will get the contract to design the chip. ByteDance's focus now seems to be on developing a video processing chip (Video Processing Unit) for faster video processing, where they were also previously seen to have started the process of designing their own AI processing chip for AI inference and general data processing purposes.
